IELTS Speaking Topics – Places

For Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test you will be given cue cards with a topic to talk about for 1 – 2 minutes. You will be given 1 minute to prepare. After you talk, be ready to answer 1 or 2 follow-up questions from the interviewer.

The following speaking cue cards/topics are centered around describing places. Before you go into the IELTS interview, “jog” your memory about places you have visited or lived in or know of so that you won’t waste too much time in trying to remember a place to talk about.

Sample Topics:

Describe a place that you have lived in that you particularly liked.

You should say:

  • when you lived there
  • who you lived with
  • what was most memorable about this place

and explain why you liked living there.

Describe a tourist attraction you have visited that you enjoyed.

You should say:

  • what the attraction was
  • when you visited it
  • what you saw and did there

and explain what you thought off it.

Describe a tourist attraction you would like to visit.

You should say:

  • what the attraction is
  • what can do and see there
  • how you know about it

and explain why you would particularly like to go there.

Describe the natural features of  an area or country that you know.

You should say:

  • which area you are going to describe
  • what natural features that area has
  • what the natural features look like

and explain how you feel about the natural features of that area.

Describe your ideal study room.

You should say:

  • where it would be
  • what equipment and furniture it would contain
  • how it would be decorated

and explain why this is ideal for studying.

Describe a city that you know well.

You should say:

  • how big the city is
  • what kind of buildings and landmarks it has
  • what transportation it has available

and explain what you particularly like or dislike about this city.
